So what is Snort network security management?
A lightweight network intrusion detection system, Snort is capable of performing realtime traffic analysis and packet logging on all IP networks. Also known as Network Security Management, a Network Security Software, NIDS is a Internet Security Program, Solution or Software.
Network Intrusion Detection System is a system responsible for detecting inappropriate, anamolous, or any other data which may be considered unauthorized occuring within a network. Unlike a firewall, which is configured to allow or deny access to a particular service or host based on a set of rules. If traffic matches an acceptible pattern, it is permitted regardless of what the packet contains. However, a NIDS captures and inspects all traffic, permitted or not. Based on its contents, at either the IP or application level, an alert for you is generated.

Snort has three main uses:
1. It can be used as a straight packet sniffer like tcpdump(1)
